Tube amps run the electricity through vacuum tubes to increase their volume (simplifying here). Solid State amps are newer, lighter, cheaper (generally) and have a slightly different tone than tube amps.

It takes time and interest and you will get there. I have bumped my headstock enough to know I want an easy check of the strings with the tuner now and again. I still rarely use pedals, but always have a big muff and a tuner pedal jacked in for every show. I now use what I use because of all the years of playing and talking. Eventually I tried out a better bass and bought one, tried out a better amp and jumped from tube/solid state hybrid to an all tube amp and love it. I got teased by some bandmates as a 'gear head', but it was worth it. It can be very expensive, but the way I did it was to get some cheaper gear and play shows and talk to other bassists and see what they use and hear what they loved about it and so on.

I believe the 6CG7 in the V4 was the reverb driver and not present in the V4B so no worries there.Īlso, for anything Ampeg always check Bruce has done a really good job of collecting all the parts needed for keeping these things ticking and usually has a good selection of the oddball tubes they used. I have a set from AES in my V4 now and they sound awesome, they're a mix of GE and RCA tubes.

AES sells matched quads of mixed brand NOS 7027As for about $200 or you can get full matched quads on ebay for $300-400. Some people report issues with the amps eating these tubes, others don't have a problem. I'd also look for 7247 tubes, that's the military spec version of the 12DW7.įor the 7027As in the power amp you can use the Sovtek or JJ reissues but their plate voltage specs are low for the ampegs. In the V4 you can actually sub a 12AX7 for the 12DW7 with no modifications (a 12DW7 is half a 12AX7 and half a 12AU7 and the 12AU7 portion isn't really sensitive to the tube swap in this amp). NOS 6K11s are usually around $20-30 each and you should only ever need one or two for the life of the amp so I wouldn't worry too much.įor 12DW7s new production JJ's are okay, for around double the price you can get quality used old stock or NOS tubes from AES and TC that I mentioned above. Which ampeg amp? I can probably make some better recommendations depending on what "unusual" tubes you need.įor the 6K11 you're stuck with old stock or buying the retrofit boards to adapt this tube to 12A_7 types. I generally won't buy from eurotubes because they shovel so much marketing onto everything they do and always try to sell you on a complete retube (pre and power) no matter if you need it or not. ,, and are all okay as long as you can wade through their marketing bs. AES and TC tubes have the best matching and customer service I've had from any online vendor. I generally use antique electronic supply for new production or TC tubes for old stock.
